Bleeding Art’s Founder Leo Wieser has his roots in theatre and was trained in set, costume and lighting design. Combined with his experience in special effects, he is able to bring to the stage the best combination of both.

The company has a long-standing history working with many performing arts companies including Alberta Ballet, Calgary Opera, Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, One Yellow Rabbit, The Banff Centre, Ground Zero Theatre, Hit&Myth Productions, and many more. In addition to providing production supplies, expendables, and special effects equipment, some examples of the special effects and custom fabrication we’ve provided include: simulated blood and blood effects; pyrotechnics; fog, snow, and haze effects; confetti and streamers; prosthetic dummies; magician’s illusion props; set pieces and custom props; and stunt-work.

A few of the shows we have done effects for include Ground Zero Theatre and Hit&Myth’s Evil Dead: The Musical in Calgary and Vancouver in which we designed the mechanical effects systems, prosthetics, and blood effects including making approximately 50 gallons of blood per run. With GZT and H&M, Bleeding Art presented the award-winning The Lieutenant of Inishmore by Martin McDonagh, and created all the prosthetics (cats, body parts, etc) and effects for the production. We provided the blood and designed and built a system for the pyrotechnic effects at the end of Calgary Opera’s Don Giovanni. And we also recently designed and fabricated a miniature metal schoolhouse that catches fire for the site-based play The Midnapore Cycle by Mieko Ouichi and directed by Marilyn Potts.
